О мероприятии

Topic : The great heritage of English writers.

There were many famous writers in England. English literature is subdivided into a lot of periods. Let's look at their most prominent representatives.

The first period is called the Old English. It was the time of the first written literature of England. We have the information about some poets of that period. The most famous of them was Caedmon. He was the Anglo-Saxon monk and the author of "Hymn".

The next period of English literature is Middle English. The well-known writer of that time was Geoffrey Chaucer. People know he wrote “The Canterbury Tales”. His works have a great popularity even today.

.There was a period of the Renaissance in the 16 century. Renowned English poets and writers Edmund Spencer, Sir Philip Sidney, Francis Bacon lived and worked at that time. John Milton wrote his poem “Paradise Lost” and described the biblical story about heaven and hell. But the most brilliant representative of the Renaissance in England was William Shakespeare.

The greatest British poet and playwright was born in 1564. His hometown is Stratford-upon-Avon. William began to write his sonnets and plays in London at the age of 22. Later Shakespeare became one of the co-owners of the theatre Globe. He lived in London, but sometimes the poet visited his family in Stratford. The playwright died at 52. William was buried in Stratford church. There is also a monument to Shakespeare in Westminster Abbey. His best-known plays are: “Othello”, “Hamlet”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, “King Lear”.

It was the period of the Restoration in the 17th century. It was the time of new forms in literature. S. Pepys wrote the first memoirs “Dairy”. There were also changes in the poetry. They were reflected in John Dryden's comedy "Marriage a la Mode."

There were several literary movements in the 18th century. The representatives of literary elite were J. Swift, D. Defoe, H. Fielding. The main themes of the poems of S. Coleridge, W. Blake, W. Wordsworth were the forces of nature. Sir Walter Scott was the pioneer of the historical novel.

The most famous writers of the Victorian period were C. Dickens, W. Thackeray, G. Elliot and T. Hardy.

There was the First World War, and it was the beginning of the modern period in English literature. The best-known representatives of this period were T. Eliot and V. Woolf. Such writers as G. Greene, W. Golding, I. Murdoch worked at the end of the 20th century.

My Favourite English Writer

It's said that none of the British writers of our age enjoyed such popularity all over the world as Agatha Christie did. Her works were translated into many languages, and scores of films were made using them as the script.

The name of Agatha Christie is a synonym for high-class detective story, as well as Pele is a symbol of football, and Marilyn Monroe is an embodiment of femininity. According to Agatha Christie herself, she began to write just to imitate her sister whose stories had already been published in magazines.

And suddenly Agatha Christie became famous as if by miracle. Having lost her father at an early age, the prospective writer didn't receive even fairly good education. During the First World War she was a nurse, then she studied pharmacology. Twenty years later she worked in a military hospital at the beginning of the Second World War.

The favourite personages of the "queen of detective story" are the detective Hercules Poirot and the sedate Miss Marple who carry out investigations in noisy London and delusive quiet countryside. The composition of her stories is very simple: a comparatively closed space with a limited number of characters, who are often plane or train passengers, tourists, hotel guests or residents of a cosy old village.

Everyone is suspected! Murders in the books of Agatha Christie are committed in most unsuitable places: in the vicar's garden or in an old abbey; corpses are found in someone's libraries being murdered with the help of tropical fishes, a poker, candelabra, a dagger or poison. Once Agatha Christie wrote: "Some ten years will pass after my death, and nobody will even remember me...". The writer was mistaken.

Agatha Christie's novels are very popular now. People of all continents read and reread "The Oriental Express", "Ten Little Negroes", "The Bertram Hotel", "The Corpse in the library" and other of her novels time and again, enjoy films made by her works, and one can hardly find a country where people do not know her name.

6 . Why do you like her detective stories?

7. What is Agath’s favourite her favourtite

8. Why did like these stories ?

Questions 2:

3.What was Robinson Crusoe friend’s name?

4.What subject did Lewis teach at Cambridge University?

Thomas: — Hello. I am reading an interesting novell.

Jayden: — So, what’s the title?

Thomas: — „Dog’s Purpose”. Sounds really strange, I know, but it’s going to be worth it.

Jayden: — And who is the author?

Thomas: — Bruce Cameron. He is an american writer. I like his books so much!

Jayden: — Cool. My favourite writer is J. K. Rowling with her „Harry Potter” books. They are absolutely incredible!

Thomas: — I agree with you. Books are one of the most useful things ever.

My favourite writers

Jeremy: Hi, Linda. How are you? Джереми: Привет, Линда. Как ты?

Linda: I’m fine, thank you. Since the weather is fine I decided to read a good book in the park.

Jeremy: I see. Great idea. What are you reading?

Linda: Oscar Wilde’s «The Picture of Dorian Gray».

Jeremy: Wow! Wilde is my favourite writer.

Linda: What a coincidence! Mine too.

Jeremy: Have you read a lot of him?

Linda: Not yet, but I’m planning to. What do you know about him and his art of writing?

Jeremy: Well, he lived and worked in the 19th century Britain. He was born in Dublin in the family of prosperous surgeon and famous prose writer. Perhaps, he inherited the talent of writing from his mother.

Linda I see. Where did he study?

Jeremy: In Dublin and Oxford, as far as I know. After graduating from the university he married a fine woman and they had two children.

Linda: When did he start writing?

Jeremy: When his sons were still little, he wrote an exciting book of fairy tales.

Linda: Sounds interesting. Did he have any other hoobies other than writing?

Jeremy: Yes, he enjoyed travelling, lecturing, meeting new people. Джереми: Linda: What else did he write except fairy tales?

Jeremy: He wrote lots of ironic essays, poems, reviews and philosophical novels.

Linda: The only novel I know is «The Picture of Dorian Gray». I mean the one I’m reading at the moment.

Jeremy: Do you like it so far?

Linda: Yes, it has a unique plot. I’ve never read something like that. It tells a lot about human nature and its vices. If everyone read and understood this book, perhaps lots of things would better.

Jeremy: What do you mean?

Linda: I mean that people would change their behavior and attitude towards others. They wouldn’t be so selfish or arrogant. They would respet other people’s needs and opinions.

Jeremy: I see. Perhaps, you are right. Other good books of Wilde include «Lady Windermere’s Fan», «The Importance of Being Earnest», «An Ideal Husband». You should read them too.

Linda: I will when I have more free time.
